Business impact of Antique World Mall Closure

The Antique World Mall in Boise is closed and due to safety reasons, it won't reopen for weeks.

"Nobody can go in the mall right now. Its deemed unsafe. They've turned power and gas off," saidUnique Boutique owner Linda Huston

Over two weeks ago, the mall closed its doors due to a roof collapse at the Reel Theatre. The mall shares a building with the Reel Theatre, which has been closed for months due to a lack of business. Although, the mall was told it's building and walls have no damage. Since no one is allowed inside, Huston said she has no access to any of her inventory currently inside the mall

"I've had people message me for the things that are in there, in the antique world mall right now and I told them I said 'there's nothing I can do right now I can't get to it,'" said Huston.

Huston said her business has lost quite a bit of sales since the closure. She and her husband have sold items on Facebook Marketplace, but it's not the same.

"To sell something on say Facebook Marketplace, we have to go, we have to meet them, its one item only usually," said Huston. "So its a big difference between having a booth there set up with multiple items and multiple people coming through and your sales are a lot different."

Huston says her business has storage units where they are keeping items for the time being. Some of the summer items are time sensitive and those will most likely be stuck waiting until next year.

"A lot of things like summer items that are in there so that's gonna be passed. That'll have to go into storage or something afterwards as we bring out the fall items," said Huston.

Huston says the closure has been difficult for her and her husband. Not being able to sell and buy new products while the status of the mall is unknown is stressful for the family.

"We were discussing the other day, 'what are we going to do with these things that are sitting here, they're accumulating?' you don't wanna just put them in storage because that's just gonna cost you more money," said Huston.

Huston's Unique Boutique is still selling it's items on Facebook Marketplace and on it's website. The mall said it will be updating it's social media page when new information is available.
